I have enjoyed painting throughout my entire life. Previously I was part owner/operator of Houston's Fine Arts, with my mother and artist Patricia Houston. After leaving the business in the early 2000's, I focussed on my family and study. Raising my 4 children and competing a Bachelor of Medical Science, specialising in Microbiology, Nutrition and Molecular Biology. I commenced my Master of Occupational Therapy in 2023 and will complete it in November 2024. My art has enabled me to combine both art and science, in particular haematology and histology which are both very visual fields. I have for the past 3 years been afforded the opportunity to display my work at Flinders University, for the Collage of Medicine and Health Emerging Leaders Showcase. My work for the showcase featured paintings inspired by my studies in Histology, Microbiology, Haematology and more recently upper limb anatomy. I hope to one day bring my art into Occupational Therapy, in particular as a proposed therapy to delay cognitive decline in clients with dementia and brain injuries.
I have always had the philosophy that art is for everyone at all levels and all walks of life. It is a valuable tool for maintaining well being, dexterity as well as a tool for improving mental health and cognitive function. |
